The Vortex Ruzi

The Ruzi is arguably one of the most well-designed and well-known fiberglass fishing vessels in the SADC region. Developed by legendary designer Gerry Jooste during his time at Ruffnek Boats in the early 2000s, the Ruzi can be considered the sweet spot of boating and travel. The perfect all-rounder for family, fishing, and casual water sports, the Ruzi has stood the test of time when it comes to exploring Africa’s vast network of rivers and lakes.
In 2024, Vortex Boats was fortunate enough to acquire the only mould for this superb watercraft. After a few alterations to the hull design carried out by Gerry himself, the modernised Vortex Ruzi brings together the old and the new, resulting in this exquisite multipurpose vessel perfect for Zimbabwe’s waterways.

Design Features

The Legacy is a fibreglass fishing boat that was created over two years of intense development to reach first prototype in Q3 2023. It is the birthchild of over 180 cumulative years of boat building and fishing experience with input from a multitude of specialists such as distinguished installer Roger Cousens who advised on the under-deck looms and electrical fitting routes. This unique and all-encompassing combination of professionals and freethinkers has resulted in Vortex Boats producing the apex of ergonomic watercraft packed full of innovative features designed to enhance and streamline one’s entire fishing experience.
An ultimate fishing platform, the Legacy is exceptionally fast, stable, and well-appointed, and is constructed to the highest standards by well-seasoned artisans and the latest techniques and boat-building materials. Vortex Boats goes above and beyond with the Legacy by offering customizable and bespoke solutions to suit the individual angler’s needs.

The Deck

The deck has been designed with both comfort and practicality in mind. Every available inch of space has been squeezed from the top deck moulds. Gunnels have been reduced to an absolute minimum, and a reverse profiled bow has allowed for the repositioning of the bass motor to harmonize the overall balance. The exceptionally wide deck easily allows anglers to comfortably stand abreast without interference.
The numerous water-resistant storage compartments throughout the deck have been designed to cater for everything an angler could wish for on the water, whilst still maintaining that sleek look and appeal. From inbuilt cooler boxes for food and drinks to spacious compartments for larger tackle and equipment, two soft felt lined 10-foot rod boxes, multiple day boxes and cubbies for electronics and the smaller items, two separate live wells, as well as a few strategically placed cup holders. Rod storage, day tackle and even that spare pair of sunglasses are always easily accessible and right at the angler’s fingertips.
The driver’s console provides space for up to three fish finders and the wider bass motor section can accommodate a further four, so no fish or underwater obstacle will escape notice. The Legacy comes with two top-of-the-range Deck Mate bucket seats which are among the best the American market has to offer. The robust and hookless Belgotex Hercules deck carpeting provides a sure footing in all weather conditions as well as an easily maintainable and longer living surface.
The main back hatch boasts space for a petrol tank, two trays for six full-sized batteries (with space for more), and multiple electrical conduits to accommodate not only current needs but also allow for easier installation on any future upgrades.

The Hull

Due to its wide and accentuated outboard chine lines and low centre of gravity, the Legacy’s hull sits true in the water at speed and rest. Its improved hydro-dynamically profiled high-speed planing pad and running surface show boosted results in hole-shot, midrange ride, and the all-important top speed.
The hull’s unique design and rear floatation pods further enhance the fishing experience as the boat neither lists nor pitches with the anglers’ movements. This stability also ensures the bass motor remains fully submerged and spot lock effective. With no wood component to compromise its premium quality, the composite hull and deck ensures the Legacy to be easily maintainable and gives a longer overall lifespan.

Trailers

The Legacy trailers are built in-house and reflect the same attention to detail, standard of excellence, and durability as the boat itself. The chassis is expertly manufactured on a single, sturdy 1.5-ton axle with heavy-duty shackle springs, and 15” wheels providing the strength and endurance necessary for Africa’s conditions. The design allows for a double axle conversion if desired. The bunks follow the curvature of the hull for a better support platform which ensures a more even load distribution when towing while facilitating easy launch and retrieval on challenging slipways.
